From creating fire by rubbing stones to the present safety matches, Match Industry has come a long way.

Match Industry had its origin in Sweden and was introduced in Mumbai by Swedish Match and in Kolkatta by the Japanese.  Later, from 1923 it found its concentration in and around Sivakasi. In India the industry was predominantly under Hand-made sector specially reserved for Small Scale. In the last 10 years, shortage of labour has forced the industry to mechanize.

Safety Matches consists of a splint dipped in chemicals and a striking surface. The head chemical consists of Potassium Chlorate, Animal Glue, Sulphur, Wax and various filling materials. The striking surface consists of Red Phosphorus, Glue and other fillers.
